After an infection led to amputations to my hands and feet, I underwent an experimental arm transplant surgery. I am only one of twelve people and one of two females in the world to receive donor hands. I see them as gifts and carry them with purpose. Hand therapy become monotonous and I was eager to get back to lifting as I had most of my life. CrossFit has become my mental and physical therapy.
Since joining the team I have begun to see a new purpose in life. My teammates have become close friends offering continued support, motivation and shoulders to lean on. We are all extremely competitive with like minds. Before I felt I was in this fight alone. That no one thought like me. Now I feel welcomed, confident and driven…more than I ever have. To me the team is much more than just competing together…it’s a sense of belonging I have never felt before.
